This high-performance 400 mm F4.5 super-telephoto prime lens weighs just 994 g (35.1 oz.)12 despite offering innovative G Master™ optics and extraordinary image quality. Balance is excellent too, affording smooth, easy handling and minimum fatigue when shooting handheld. Overall length is just 242 mm (9-1/2 in.) for outstanding mobility.
G Master sharpness for breathtaking detail
Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) and ED glass elements in an advanced G Master optical design minimise aberration for stunning resolution, while Sony’s Nano AR Coating II suppresses flare and ghosting for superior clarity and contrast, even in backlit conditions that are often encountered when shooting wildlife and other outdoor subjects.
Individually optimised for exquisite bokeh
In addition to featuring an innovative new optical design, the spherical aberration of each lens is individually calibrated to deliver optimum bokeh quality. An 11-blade circular aperture contributes to smooth, beautiful ball bokeh. Gorgeous G Master bokeh can really make subjects stand out, especially at a super-telephoto focal length.
Fast, precise AF captures the moment
Two of Sony's advanced XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors and a refined algorithm bring out the full AF potential of the latest camera bodies. Focus and subject tracking are fast, precise, and quiet. Unpredictable subject movement is reliably tracked and captured, even when shooting 120 fps13 bursts with the α9 III body.
A great choice for movies
Innovative lens technology ensures that focus breathing is effectively suppressed for smooth, professional looking movies. The XD Linear Motor drive system and circular aperture unit are quiet too, so movie audio won’t be spoiled by lens noise or vibration. Linear Response MF supports direct, intuitive manual focus control when needed.
800 mm with optional teleconverter
An optional teleconverter14 can be used to extend focal length up to 800 mm for even greater reach when you want to capture distant wildlife or other subjects.
Customisable for any shooting style
Four focus hold buttons allow easy access in any orientation. A function ring can be assigned to control APS-C/Full Frame switching, Preset Focus,16 or Power Focus. A dedicated switch is also provided for optical stabilisation ON/OFF switching and mode selection.
Reliable in challenging outdoor conditions
A dust and moisture resistant17 design ensures high reliability in outdoor conditions where light rain and airborne dust might otherwise be a problem. The front lens element features a fluorine coating that prevents contaminants from sticking to the lens surface while making it easier to clean.
