Reviewing the Canon EOS R5 (Body Only)

The brand new Canon EOS R5 is not just a camera, but a brand statement. With it, Canon is trying to convince even the most skeptical photographers to embrace new technology. Furthermore, if you are a die-hard Canon EOS 5D Mark IV fan, they are talking straight to you.

The flagship of Canon Mirrorless Cameras has arrived on the market and is an amazing feature-filled, killer combo. I don't mean to be a spoiler, but it is among the best Canon cameras out there right now.

Read on, because the reason is what comes up next.

Canon EOS R5 Review

I was skeptical too when all these mirrorless cameras started flooding the market. I mean, for someone who has been shooting pictures for a living, my cameras are nothing short of my income tools.

So, here is my review on this ground-breaking camera meant to change our minds.

Let´s talk ergonomics

The first thing I was afraid of when picking up this Canon Mirrorless Full Frame camera was that it was going to be too heavy. More times than not, when you pick up a product that is so filled with features, is way too heavy. In this case, it was the opposite, a lightweight ally to hang from my neck.

Furthermore, if you are a frequent Canon user, you´ll find it as a pleasant surprise that all the important controls are right where you would expect them to be. Finally, the grip is effortless and feels just like home.

Let´s talk display and EVF

Another pleasant surprise is that the EVF display on this Canon EOS R camera is bigger than most. Also, the resolution in it is flawless thanks to its 5.76 million dots in the frame. As for the LCD display, it is a vari-angle, 3.2-inch featuring a 2.1-million dot design.

Indeed, I found the adjustable brightness to be crucial when using the camera under broad sunlight.

What about connectivity and power?

This department is more than covered; moreover, this is one of the most connectivity-friendly models you´ll find in any camera warehouse. Options include:

  • Bluetooth

  • Dual-band Wi-Fi

  • Seamless connection to smartphones and tablets allowing remote control of the camera with the Canon CameraConnect app.

  • Transfer files directly to Canon´s cloud hosting service.

  • This camera allows tethering, thus, you can use it as a webcam. Connection is given by a USB Type-C cord.

In the power department, things are not so solid, though. You can get up to 320 shots using the LCD display and 220 with the EVF. Of course, these numbers fall drastically when you add all the other bells and whistles to the mix. For example, Wi-Fi, video playbacks, and such will drain your battery much faster.

Competition, such as the Sony 7R (III or IV), will give you twice the battery life.

Let´s talk autofocus

I have to start this section by saying this camera has the best autofocus technology I´ve seen on a Canon camera so far. I´m not talking only about the Canon Mirrorless Full Frame series, but also my beloved 5D is no match in this category. The subject recognition, tracking performance, and speed are just superb.

Stabilisation, finally a part of the pack

Finally, welcome to the first Canon EOS R featuring state-of-the-art stabilisation. Moreover, the IBIS system uses a five-axis system to correct shakes and also works in tandem with RF lenses featuring stabilisation systems. Shaking is no longer a problem (and shooting on the move isn´t either).

Did anyone say 8K raw video?

This is another department where the R5 falls a little behind the competition. For starters, you need CFExpress cards to pull off 8K speed. Secondly, you have a heating issue when you have been filming for a while.  Finally, file sizes in 8K video are very hard to handle unless you are an accomplished videographer with special equipment.

Although limited, it is a great feature if you need to go hyper-realistic on your videos.

Doing magic with stills

If there is a category in which this camera can convince you to change systems and go full-on mirrorless is this one. This statement camera is not the flagship just because; it is the flagship because of its superlative capabilities as a camera.

Adding to the 45MP, the five-axis image stabilisation system makes the Canon R5 the perfect stills companion. Furthermore, there is nothing to envy any other machine I´ve tried (by Canon or other brands) in terms of results.

Let me say it again, this is indeed a superlative photo camera. Professionals like me need this kind of result; if it WOWs me, it´ll WOW my clients too.

Verdict

If you are doubtful about converting to Canon Mirrorless Cameras, make yourself a favor and try the Canon EOS R5. It is, to my knowledge, experience, and taste, one of the best Canon cameras I´ve ever shot with.

Mirrorless cameras are here to stay, isn´t it about time you give them a try?

Happy photo shooting!
