  • Diamonds Camera - Our Review On Canon RF Lenses

Canon lenses have always been the benchmark of the industry. Moreover, if you already own a Canon camera, you know what I´m talking about. But what about mirrorless cameras? They are, indeed, the new benchmark, and thus, fitting it with the proper Canon RF Lens will take your photographs to the next level.

Read on as we talk about the Canon RF lens range, the Canon EF lens, and Canon EF-M Lens too.

Mirrorless is the new standard

Not only Canon cameras but all the major brands in the world have their take on mirrorless cameras. Furthermore, it is becoming an increasingly competitive market with so many brands fighting for the same niche. Truth be told, though, it is a very convenient and powerful package that fits the bill of virtually any photographic endeavor.

In short, mirrorless technology completely revolutionised the way we take photographs. Thus, if you haven´t tried one yet, or don´t own one, you should go out and try a couple. That being said, regardless of the body you choose, these Canon RF lenses need to be their companion.

Canon´s take on mirrorless cameras

When talking about the brand new Canon Mirrorless Full Frame series of cameras, we have to understand what is what. Indeed, Canon manufactures cameras to address virtually any need you might have and then some.

For example, if you are a hobbyist who won´t make a living selling a particular shot but enjoy great-quality pictures, you should get a Canon M-series camera. These types of cameras are compatible with the Canon EF-M Lens series and are mirrorless but not full frame.

On the other hand, if you are a professional photographer, you should let the magic of your eyeshine through a Canon mirrorless full-frame camera. These models are the Canon EOS R mirrorless and the Canon EOS RP.

Between the EOS RP and the EOS R, we could say that the first is for the experienced hobbyist and the second is for full-on professionals. Besides the easier, more intuitive user interface in the first case, there is also a difference in terms of Megapixels. While the EOS RP offers 26 megapixels, the Canon EOS R offers 30+.

Both of these cameras are compatible with the following Canon RF lenses.

Canon RF lenses

To begin with, let´s say that the innovation allowing the EOS R and EOS RP cameras to display lens information in the viewfinder is nothing short of great. Indeed, checking the settings on the lens without looking away from the objective is such a big help, we should write Canon a thank you letter.

Moreover, the entire lineup of lenses features a control ring on the lens barrel. With this ring, you can control a multiplicity of functions including aperture, shutter speed, compensation, and exposure among many others. Plus, you can now see modifications made without taking your eye away from the objective.

Also, in the same vein, the optical image stabilisation technology in some of the higher-end models is a very welcome addition. Furthermore, the lens´s mechanical function communicating with the body of the camera makes it an almost infallible combo.

Light-weight & portability

We, photographers, don´t like carrying around a heavy bag full of big lenses. Unfortunately, a professional-grade gig requires more than one. In this case, Canon has achieved what seemed impossible and some of the all-time workhorses in the brand are now smaller and easier to carry.

For example, the 70-200mm F/2.8, used in sports and weddings alike by all of us now has the size and weight of 85mm. Yet, that incredible quality that made it number one on many people´s list is still there.

Image stabilisation NANO motor

The inclusion of a NANO motor for image stabilisation in the lens that communicates with the camera body is a great feature. It not only allows for perfect stills regardless of the scenario but also does it in a user-friendly manner.

A great example of this is the walk-around lens or RF 24-70mm F/2.8 L IS USM. Adding some image stabilisation to a lens that was made for taking photographs on the road is what I call nailing it. Although it doesn´t share the same lightweight and portability as the previous example, it received a major upgrade.

Close-range lenses

Another great addition to the RF line of lenses is the close-range line. This is because the new RF mount features a 54mm lens mount and large-diameter elements with a placement closer to the image plane. In other words, the image is bright from one edge to the opposite and light fallout is nimble.

In this case, the new RF 35mm F1.8 Macro IS STM became a compact and versatile companion that can take epic shots at half a foot of distance. Plus, it comes with state-of-the-art image stabilisation to make those portraits a life-long memory.

Conclusion

Canon lenses are one step beyond the competition. Indeed, ever since mirrorless cameras flooded the market, Canon has worked non-stop to bring the needed glasses to accompany the stunning bodies. In other words, you could, as a professional photographer, make a move toward mirrorless cameras and replicate your cherished lens collection.

Will mirrorless cameras and lenses finally dominate the market in years to come? We shall see, for now, it is time to complete our lenses set and start making the best of this new technology.
